It's been raining for several days here. I think I might need a canoe or a kayak to get to class soon. Because of the rain, I don't have pics for the week. Otherwise it would be here's a pic of the rain. Here's raindrops on my lens. This is a pic of the storm drain that's clogged with leaves and the river that is backed up from it. Here's is my wet feet. Drowned rat selfie. I will try to do some pics inside buildings this week and more from the lab too.
This week in theory, we will be discussing the book China's Motor: A Thousand Years of Petty Capitalism. It sounds exciting, doesn't it? It's a riveting tale of social, political and economic analysis through Marx's modes of production. Sexy, huh? This is my least favorite book of the class. I facilitate on Thursday.
For our last analytical review, we get to choose our own book. That lead me to spend hours on Amazon looking at books. My wish list is a little bit longer than it was when I started. I ordered a book, but I have to wait until it gets here to see if it will work for the assignment.
About books-I don't know about anyone else, but I don't like to buy used books if they have any highlighting in them. I told you last week how I use sticky notes and letters to mark important passages in my books. I can't stand it when someone else has already done so, especially if it is done in pen or highlighter. It makes the book worthless to me. I am a little bit neurotic about it too. If the marks are in pencil, I have to erase all of them before I can start reading the book. That's why my eraser hates me.
Last week in theory, I quoted the 1985 G.I. Joe cartoon TV series. They used to end the show every time with "knowing is half the battle." I know I am a total dork, but it was relevant to what we were discussing, really. The professor asked "who is G.I. Joe" and no one else knew what I was talking about. Story of my life.
We're studying ceramics in archaeology this week. Last week was artifacts like sandstone saws and adzes. We will have a ceramics quiz. Oh how I love those quizzes.***
My roommate and I went grocery shopping today since we now have a fridge and a microwave in our room. That means I drove my car today. My car has a few dings from other people's car doors that weren't there before. That seriously pisses me off. I want to hide in my car, ambush the dingers and add them to my bone collection. (Yes mom, I know I can't. But I want to.)
My roommate successfully completed her laundry with no major flooding incidents this week. So did I. They just added laundryview to our laundry rooms here on campus. You can go to a website and see which washers and dryers are being used and how much time is left on them, It also shows peak use times so you can try to avoid them. This means we don't have to hang out in the laundry room or run upstairs all the time to see if our laundry is done or if there is a machine available. I think it's a pretty neat system.
I collect quotes in the margins of my notebook as I listen to lectures. It amuses me. My theory professor Bob Marshall is a goldmine for quotes. He delivers them in a deadpan voice that makes it even funnier. Here's some things he's said:
"Bananas aren't devices. They're fruit. Slice that device up on my cereal."
"For his dissertation, he measured angles of the jaw. Pfft. I guess there's something for everyone."
"If anyone says to you intelligent design, you say to them 'lower back.' It's like throwing water on the wicked witch."
"At this late date, since we've destroyed the world pretty much..."
About archaeology...
"Every little bit of crap somebody dragged out of the ground."
When asked if our final presentation could have a PowerPoint...
"Do you have a compulsion that requires you to use one?"
"Ritual is the next best thing to NFL."
It's weird for me that everyone calls the professors by their first names. I am used to using Dr. or Professor and a last name as a form of address. It's taking some getting used to.
Just a couple more weeks and I get to go home for Thanksgiving and see my kids! And Kelly. And MY CATS!!!! I miss my cats.
