Week 5: Midterm

I don't think I have any midterm tests, but there is still plenty of work to be done. I finished The Creation of Inequality and the 1000 word paper that goes with it. I will be facilitator for the first time on Tuesday for my Theory class. We will be finishing up the discussion on the book Hierarchy in the Forest: The Evolution of Egalitarian Behavior. We have one book left before we get to pick our own book to analyze. Has anyone read a book that you think might be good for analysis? I am looking for one that leans more towards BioAnth than cultural.

I am working with two other grad students on a project in Archaeology analyzing faunal remains. We will be presenting on it at the end of the quarter. I can tell if a fish vertebra is from a salmon or not now. My flake quiz results were mediocre, but I expected that.

I am still narrowing down my thesis topic, I realized the other day that I don't want to just measure bones. I want to do something in forensics with decay or preservation.

I told someone that I don't drink coffee and her response was "are you not from around here?" I think I might be the only grad student around here who doesn't drink coffee.

Stack 12 had a kitchen fire the other night. Don't worry, they put it out before the cops and fire department showed up, but our stacks are connected, so our fire alarms go off too. I could smell something melting this time and knew it wasn't someone vaping and setting the alarms off again. A police officer cleared the building and let us go back in. The fire department drove by and honked their horn, but never came in. I heard it was a pan of fish that blew up.

Yesterday was Welcome Weekend/Open House here at WWU. Prospective students and their families were all over campus. I helped one of the other grad students and the Anthro Club give tours of the Anthro Labs and a little lesson on bones. It was fun. I thought I was just going to the lab to work, so I just rolled out of bed and threw a hoody on. I might have put on some makeup (or showered!) if I would have known I had to talk to people. Oh well, I guess I just looked like a tired grad student.

My roommate, Crystal, has been sick. The poor girl is coughing all night long. I was tempted to kill her last night, but I know it isn't her fault. It's hard to be sick and away from home. Hopefully she will feel better soon!

That brings us to Crystal vs. the laundry. When I got back from the lab yesterday, our room was empty. I went up to the laundry room to see if Crystal was up there. When I opened the stairwell door, I see Crystal running down the hall with a panicked look on her face. She had put her laundry into the front loader washing machine and started it. As it filled, water started shooting out of the soap dispenser all over the floor. She frantically turned off the water, but not before the whole floor was covered in water. She mopped it up twice because even after it was off water kept coming out from under the machine. (All this was going one while prospective students and parents were visiting the dorm right next to the laundry room that was the showroom for the dorms. She was cussing up a storm while she mopped.) I unplugged the machine and we restarted it. It worked fine, but the other washer decided to leak all over the floor. WTF? She mopped again and decided she was done doing laundry. Later, I did my laundry without incident. Apparently the washers have been leaking off and on and no one has said anything to the RA. The kid from down the hall said they just let it dry. Really? The laundry room is right above our suite. It needs to be fixed!
The laundry room floor is sparkly clean now.

Rainy walk

Leaves changing

Bike rack or a hitching post?

This is painted on the covered bridge walkway. Someone is anti-Apple or anti-big business?

There are crows everywhere. I see them right outside of dorm windows. I wonder how often they sneak in and steal things.

We moved our desks so we can't see each other. We were mutually distractive.

Glow in the dark skeleton on the back of our door. He says "What's up?" or "Come at me, bro?" His wrists are all kinds of messed up. I think his hands are on backwards.

Foggy day

This is the anthropology lounge. I have two classes in here.

I got Kelly a smart phone so I can text him and he can keep up with me on Facebook and my blog. He only had a flip phone with no texting before. It's going to take him a little while to figure out how to use his new phone. Grace has a phone now too.

Yesterday was a full month since I have seen my kids. I sure miss them. Kelly might come see me next weekend. If he does, he will stay in the dorms with me because my roommate will be going home for the weekend.
